Training musicians may progress at a faster rate when their teachers provide instruction in an autonomy-supportive (AS) way. Here are four ways in which indicate teachers may foster an autonomy-supportive studio:
- Express confidence in students’ abilities (Gagne, 2003: Sierens, Pansteenkiste, Goossens, Soenens, & Dochy, 2009)
- Acknowledge students’ goals and perspectives (Troum, 2010)
- Provide informational feedback (Deci, Vallerand, Pelletier, & Ryan, 1991)
- Provide rationale for materials and tasks (Deci, Vallerand, Pelletier, & Ryan, 1991)
